Puno, a city situated in the southeastern part of Peru near the border with Bolivia, is the capital of the Puno Region. It graces the shores of Lake Titicaca, renowned as the highest navigable lake globally.
Renowned as the “Folklore Capital of Peru,” Puno boasts a vibrant cultural heritage. Its population mainly comprises Aymara and Quechua indigenous people, who have diligently preserved their traditional customs and rituals. A significant event in Puno is the Virgen de la Candelaria festival, held in February, where lively parades, music, and dance captivate attendees.
Lake Titicaca, a prominent attraction near the city, not only claims the title of South America’s largest lake but also holds immense historical and cultural significance. The lake is home to the Uros, a community living on artificial floating islands made of reeds. Visitors can embark on boat tours to explore these unique islands and gain insight into the Uros’ way of life.
Over time, Lake Titicaca’s waters became the habitat for a population that endured and adapted to the lake’s climatic conditions. They are affectionately referred to as the “children of the lake” and are among the oldest communities in the Peruvian highlands.
Situated at an elevation of 3,817 meters above sea level, the island of Amantaní stands out with its ceremonial centers, namely “Pachamama” (dedicated to the feminine) and “Pachatata” (dedicated to the masculine). These centers continue to serve as venues for ancestral ceremonies on important dates, as well as expressions of gratitude to Mother Earth for their agricultural produce. The population of Amantaní still practices the agricultural techniques passed down by their ancestors, employing terraces for farming activities.
Distinctive among the surrounding islands, Taquile island is renowned for its textile art, which holds profound cultural value and enjoys global recognition. The island’s way of life finds eloquent expression in its intricate textiles, showcasing the remarkable skills and craftsmanship of its residents.
